My Dream Dollhouse

During the summer of 2020, I decided to buy a dollhouse and design my dream home.  While choosing what features, furniture and styles to incorporate and how I wanted each floor to be laid out I also decided to include universal design throughout the house.

Throughout the whole house, I incorporated 3' -4' walkways, rugs to help with grip and tactile texture as the whole house has hardwood flooring, and layered lighting through recessed cans, lamps, and sconces. In the kitchen, I wanted to incorporate a universally designed kitchen island that would allow standing, barstool seating, and be wheelchair accessible as well.  In the bathroom, I wanted to incorporate a walk-in shower to eliminate tripping hazards and falls as well as a shower bench and multiple shower head options.

Building this dollhouse has been a lot of fun but also very helpful and knowledgeable. This project helped me understand universal design better by allowing me to physically model it and see everything up close in person.  I also learned a lot about scale and how important it is to measure twice and cut once.
